Moments out of Time
Images, lines, gestures, moods from the films of the years…
In 1971, Richard T. Jameson and Kathleen Murphy offered the readers of Movietone News a different kind of celebration of the best of the year. In addition to the traditional “Top Ten” lists that every critic is apparently obligated by law to provide, they attempted to capture the ephemeral moments of cinema magic through the year in a series of pithy sketches. “Moments of out Time” became a tradition established in Movietone News, revived in the nineties in Film Comment under Jameson’s editorship, and now gracing the virtual pages of MSN Entertainment.
We’ve reprinted the “Moments” of years past from Movietone News and Film Comment (reprinted with the kind permission of Film Comment’s current editor Gavin Smith) on Parallax View. Just scroll down to find various years, or click here to our dedicated page for links to every reprinted column plus links to the “Moments” published on MSN Entertainment.

I first became acquainted with Mr. Jameson and Ms. Murphy’s Moments out of Time feature in FILM COMMENT. They were instrumental in inspiring me to write about film, and essential in reminding me that sometimes even the worst of films can have a graceful moment worth recalling. Thank you for revisiting these here.
